Postbox was better.

It was one of the best email clients ever made for Mac. Then, in October 2024, eM Client acquired Postbox and shut it down.

A lot of us went looking for something else. Some found it. Some didn't. Some are still using whatever they landed on and quietly wishing it worked more like Postbox did.

What happened to Postbox

For years, Postbox was the email client Mac power users pointed to when someone asked why they didn't just use Apple Mail or Gmail in a browser tab. It had a real unified inbox, fast search, keyboard-driven workflows, Quick Move for filing messages without touching the mouse, and an interface that felt like actual native Mac software.

In October 2024, eM Client announced it was acquiring Postbox Inc. and discontinuing the product. Development stopped. Support wound down. Former Postbox users were pointed toward eM Client itself, with a discount to help make the switch.

Some people made that move and it stuck. Others tried eM Client, or Apple Mail, or Thunderbird, or Mimestream, or MailMate, or Spark, or just gave up and now check Gmail in a browser tab. Plenty of people are still looking.

A few people just kept running their last working copy of Postbox instead of switching to anything. It still opens, for now. But it's not really a plan - it's a countdown. Every macOS update is another chance for it to quietly stop working for good, with nothing behind it to fix it when that happens.

What we're trying to find out

  • How many former Postbox users still haven't found a replacement they actually like?
  • What specifically people miss about it?
  • What they're using instead, and how well it's actually working out?
  • Whether a modern, Postbox-inspired Mac email client would get them to switch?
  • Whether that's something people would actually pay for?
  • How many people would want early access if we build it?

Frequently asked questions

What is this site for?

This is a short survey to find out how many former Postbox users still haven't found a replacement they're happy with.

Will Postbox come back?

We don't know of any plans for that. That's part of why we're asking -- if enough people still miss it, that's a signal worth taking seriously.

Is eM Client a good Postbox replacement?

For some people, yes -- it's actively maintained and was Postbox's own recommended migration path. For others, it hasn't fully replaced what they liked about Postbox, which is exactly the kind of thing we're trying to measure.

How long does the survey take?

About 3 minutes. It's a short, straightforward set of questions -- no account required.

What do you do with my answers?

We use them to figure out whether there's enough demand to build something. If you leave your email, we'll only use it to follow up about this project. See our privacy page for details.

If any of this sounds familiar, we'd like to hear from you.
